Micro Ring Hair Extensions: What You Need to Know

If you’re a hair extension addict already or you’re a first-timer looking for the perfect extensions, you’ll know that there are a lot of different types on the market.

In this blog, I’m going to talk about micro ring hair extensions, and what sets them apart from other types of hair extensions.

The main plus about micro ring extensions is that there is no glue, heat, sewing, or braiding of the hair involved so there is less potential damage to the natural hair. They also sit quite flat on the head so they look natural and can be more comfortable to sleep in than other types of hair extensions.

How are micro ring hair extensions fitted?

Your hair is attached to the extension with a small ring (various sizes of micro rings) which the stylist clamps shut to secure the bond. Fitting a full-head of micro ring extensions takes around 2-3 hours as each hair extension strand is fitted individually.

Are micro rings suitable for me?

Micro ring extensions are best suited to medium to thick hair, as they can slip down fine or very fine hair, and the weight of the extensions themselves can put a lot of tension on the natural hair. Its very important to have an even ratio of natural hair to extension hair to avoid any type of traction.

How are they removed?

Micro ring extension removal is very quick and simple. The technician simply opens up the micro ring with some pliers and the hair extensions slide out.

How long do they last?

With good aftercare, micro rings can last for between six and nine months. I always recommend that you come for a maintenance appointment every six to eight weeks, so I can check on the condition of your extensions and move them up as your natural hair grows out.

How do you look after them?

No matter what type of hair extensions you opt for, they are a commitment, both of time and money. So it makes sense that if you are spending your hard-earned cash on a beautiful set of extensions, you want them to last and look as good as possible, for as long as possible.

One of the main reasons that hair extensions need so much tlc is that they aren’t attached to your scalp like your natural hair. This means that they don’t benefit from the oils your scalp produces which keeps your natural hair soft and shiny.

Here is a quick guide to keeping your hair extensions looking amazing.

Wash and condition hair immediately after swimming

Ideally, you shouldn’t expose your extensions to chlorine, but if you are a water baby and love a dip in the pool, wear a hat, and wash and condition your hair as soon as you get out.

Brush your hair regularly with a hair extension brush

To prevent tangling, brush your extensions regularly with a hair extension brush. Start at the ends and work upwards, taking care not to pull too hard near the bonds.

Tie your hair up for bed

Tie your hair up or put it in a loose braid while you sleep to avoid matting and tangling. Investing in a silk pillowcase helps with this too.

Never go to bed with wet hair.

Washing your hair extensions

Always use the recommended products as shampoos containing harsh chemicals can dry your extensions out. When you wash your extensions, make sure the water is warm, not hot, and let the water run down the hair. Apply products and massage them into the hair, taking care not to rub the hair as this can cause tangling. Rinse the hair thoroughly then apply conditioner to the lengths and ends. When it comes to hair extensions, less is more when it comes to washing. Too frequent washing can dry the hair out, as can using too much heat when styling.

If you’ve been following us on social media, you’ll remember the lovely Alison, our competition winner from last year who won a free hair integration system. Well since then, she’s never looked back and she recently got married in Vegas!

I spoke to her about how her struggles with hair loss and how her hair system has changed her life.

The Hair Confidante (THC): When did you start suffering from hair loss?

Alison (A): My hair started falling out 13 days after my first FEC-T chemotherapy treatment for triple negative breast cancer. My hair never grew back after treatment, which I was told is rare.

THC: What solutions did you try before trying a hair system?

A: I tried lotions that you had to apply to your scalp to encourage hair growth, and I also tried shampoo treatments and wigs.

THC: What made you choose The Hair Confidante?

A: I saw a post from a lady on the Younger Breast Cancer Network (YBCN) Facebook page, and I thought I’d take a look. I noticed Emy was running a competition to win a hair integration system so I entered and couldn’t believe it when I won 1st prize!

THC: How did the hair system change your life?

A: It gave me my confidence back. I no longer had to worry about my wig blowing off and I felt amazing as I’d never had long hair before. Emy made me feel at ease from the moment I went for my consultation. I was overwhelmed with her generosity and kindness, and I felt extremely lucky. It has completely changed my life.

THC: Was the system easy to manage?

A: Yes, it was easier to manage than I thought. It’s easy to wash, though drying and styling it takes me a bit of time, but I absolutely love it.

THC: What advice would you give to people suffering from hair loss?

A: Go and see Emy! She will advise you on which hair loss solution is the best one for you. I wouldn’t be without my hair system now. It’s worth all the sacrifices to have such wonderful hair!

THC: And finally, huge congratulations on getting married! How did having a new hair system make you feel on the day?

A: Thank you! I felt beautiful, confident, and so much more feminine than I would have done wearing a wig. I was able to style my hair and it just felt so natural. I can’t thank Emy enough!

As you know if you’re one of my lovely loyal clients or you follow me on social media, modern hair systems can look absolutely gorgeous. They look just like your own hair and you can swim, go to the gym, sleep, shower in them, you name it.

But there are some differences between hair systems and your natural hair which you need to know about so you can keep your own system looking and feeling as amazing as the day it was fitted.

How a hair system differs from your natural hair

If you lose hair from your hair system, it won’t regrow

Unlike natural hair that usually grows back, once hair is gone from a hair system, it’s gone. This is why you have to follow my aftercare advice and have proper maintenance. You need to avoid things that cause hair loss and breakage as much as possible.

Your hair system won’t be protected by your scalp’s natural oils

The glands attached to your hair follicles make a natural oil called sebum which coats your hair and keeps it nourished and hydrated. Your hair system won’t have access to these natural oils so you need to keep it hydrated with conditioner and deep conditioning treatments.

My top tips for looking after your hair system

Do:

*Detangle hair with a wide-toothed comb or good quality hair brush. Start from the ends and work your way up.

*When you wash your hair, only use the recommended products

*Pat shampoo over your hair system rather than massaging it in which can cause tangling

*Use a deep conditioning treatment once per week to keep it hydrated

*Sleep with a 100% silk scarf on or on a silk pillowcase to prevent friction and breakage

*Sleep with hair tied back

*Learn some good blowdrying techniques to keep your system looking sleek

*Use a heat protection cream or spray

*Use professional quality products such as leave in conditioners and serums, avoid heavy hairsprays

*Use a good finishing serum or Argan oil to keep return hairs at bay and to keep your ends subtle.

Don’t:

*Wash your hair system too often as this can dry it out

*Wash your hair system with hot water

*Rub your hair system when drying it with a towel, pat it dry instead

*Sleep with wet hair as this can cause matting

*Use poor quality or heavy silicone lined products

*Attemp to colour your hair system yourself

*Expose your hair system to excessive sunlight, harsh chemicals, or chlorinated water. If you swim, use a leave-in product to protect your hair system and Malibu C swimmers products and then wash and condition it as soon as you get out of the pool. If you know you’re going to be spending a lot of time in the sun, wear a hat, or use products with added UV filters.

The important thing to remember is that your hair system is an investment so it makes sense to look after it. Natural hair can recover from chemical treatments, excessive heat styling, and other damage, hair systems can’t.

If you suffer from hair loss, you’ll probably have experienced a rollercoaster of emotions. Maybe after years of hating what you see when you look in the mirror and researching different solutions, you’ve given up hope that anything will work. When your confidence is low and you’re in distress, you might not feel like you want to go to a big faceless company to discuss hair loss solutions; what you need is someone who will understand and care. Someone like The Hair Confidante.

Emy Hassan is the proud and very talented owner of The Hair Confidante and she uses her knowledge and experience to change lives. Here’s why she loves what she does ( and why her gorgeous new puppy is the apple of her eye!)

When did you first become interested in hair replacements?

I’ve been wearing different types of hair replacements for around 22 years now. When I was 15, you’d find me in the afro hair shops in London, trying on the wigs. I’ve done it all, from wearing clip on ponytails to synthetic hair bunches, and gluing wefts into my hair; and yes, I do cringe when I think about it now! The things we do to our hair all in the name of having more volume!

Was hair replacement something that you always wanted to do?

No, in fact I went from being just about to complete a degree in Nursing and Midwifery to working with hair; a complete change in career path. Maybe some people would have called it madness, but I do think I made the right decision!

What was it that led you to focus on hair loss solutions?

I’d been a hair extension technician for several years, then I began working for a trichologist in Cairo. I learned all about the huge range of hair replacement solutions that were available specifically for hair loss and I was fascinated. It opened up a whole new world for me.

What’s the most rewarding part of your job?

Every part of my job is rewarding, Building a hair system and seeing the positive effect it has on people’s lives is amazing. That feeling never gets old. Seeing my clients’ hair (and their confidence) grow is a great feeling and it’s what makes my job the absolute best!

Is there any client ‘success story’ that sticks in your mind?

Yes, my greatest success stories are always with my clients who have suffered from trichotillomania. The one story that has always stuck in my mind was a client who had been pulling her hair out since she was young, to the point where her scalp would bleed. I worked with her along with her therapist and a year and a half later, she was able to go without a hair replacement system. It was a long and difficult road because she’d pull at her hair system and remove it, but after a few relapses, she learned some new coping mechanisms to deal with her condition and was able to recognise the hard work she had done to get her hair to grow to a decent length and thickness. It has been seven months now since the hair system was removed and we still keep in touch regularly.

What makes you different?- why do clients choose The Hair Confidante?

The reason I chose the name The Hair Confidante was because I wanted my clients to see me as the person they could confide in about their deepest hair problems and fears. My clients choose me because they are given a private and bespoke service, and not a ‘one size fits all’ approach. I really use my knowledge and experience to offer the best options for every person who walks through my doors. I like to build a relationship with my clients, so when they come to their appointments, it feels just like they’re visiting a friend.

If you could give ladies who are suffering from hair loss just one piece of advice, what would it be?

My advice would be DO NOT DESPAIR!! There are so many options available nowadays, and hair replacements are much more socially acceptable now than they were even as little as 10 years ago. When you’re looking for hair loss solutions, do your research and don’t be pressured into buying something you are not sure about.

What do you like to do in your spare time when you’re not transforming ladies’ hair?

When I have lots of free time (which is hardly ever!) I love to travel. Last year we went castle spotting in the Scottish highlands and it was just amazing! It’s such a breathtakingly beautiful and spiritual place. I’m hoping to do it all again next year with my mum.

Tell us something people don’t know about you

Hmm…probably the one thing that people don’t know about me is I’m such a home bird! If I’m not working, I’m usually at home working or just relaxing. Clients always ask if I’m out partying on a Friday night; maybe that’s people’s perception of hairdressers, eternally happy party animals! But that’s not me. I love to spend a Friday night snuggled up with my dog and a nice glass of Rose, either reading one of the Outlander books (my obsession!) or watching a good film.

Tell us more about your gorgeous new puppy

Ahh my lovely boy Chapo; he’s our gorgeous golden Labrador puppy. I got him because we lost our last dog two years ago and our lives just hadn’t been the same since. Chapo is now eight months old and he is the funniest and most affectionate little boy ever! I’m totally obsessed with him; I love taking him out on fun walks and watching him swim in the rivers and sea. I’m an unashamedly proud dog parent!
